DUI With Injury In Maryland

Drunk driving laws in Maryland are already plenty harsh on those people who are convicted on charges like DUI or DWI. However, if you are accused of driving drunk and causing injuries to others in the process, the punishment becomes substantially more severe.

Serious injury

Maryland’s Criminal Law Code specifically notes in Section 3-211 that it is illegal for any person to cause “life-threatening injury to another” as a result of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If a person operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol causes life-threatening injuries to another person, then he or she will be found guilty of a misdemeanor. Punishment for causing serious bodily injury while under the influence includes a maximum prison term of two years and a fine of up to $3,000.

Death

If a person operates a vehicle while under the influence and his or her actions cause the death of another person, he or she faces incredibly serious criminal charges. This can result in prison sentence of five years and up to $5,000 in fines, not to mention costly civil lawsuits that will likely follow.
